AMY TINKLER has been selected to compete in the World Cup of Gymnastics that will be staged at London’s O2 Arena next month.

The Bishop Auckland Olympian will be one of four British gymnasts competing at the event, which will take place on Saturday, April 8.

Tinkler will compete in the all-around competition as world-class gymnastics returns to London under the auspices of Barry Hearn’s Matchroom Sport group.

The Rio bronze medallist will be joined in the women’s event by Ellie Downie, who won an all-around bronze at the 2015 European Championships, with Sam Oldham and Brinn Bevan representing Britain in the men’s event.

“I’m so excited to compete in London, in front of such a massive crowd,” said Tinkler, who returned to action for the first time since last summer’s Olympics when she competed in the United States last weekend.

“I love the atmosphere of a big crowd, and to know that pretty much everyone is supporting me is a huge motivation, and I know will definitely boost my performance. The O2 is an iconic venue, and it’s an incredible honour to be competing in there.”

The World Cup of Gymnastics will feature nine male and nine female gymnasts including Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, the Olympic champion on parallel bars, and 16-year-old Russian Angelina Melinikova, who was a 2016 Olympic team silver medallist.

The women will compete in the afternoon on vault, uneven bars, beam and floor, with Tinkler tending to excel in the latter, with the men competing in the evening on floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

The event will be the final leg of the World Cup series, with the overall title going to the performer who has gained most points at the American Cup, Stuttgart World Cup and the World Cup of Gymnastics in London.

Tinkler finished ninth at the American Cup last weekend, having been forced to pull out of her final piece of apparatus.
