KAT DRISCOLL and Amy Tinkler have both been named on the British gymnastics team to compete at this summer's Olympic Games in Rio.

Driscoll, who is from West Rainton and a member of the Apollo club in Washington, has been selected for the women's individual trampoline.

The 30-year-old will be competing in her second Olympics, having finished ninth at the 2012 Games in London.

The Northern Echo:

"It was an honour to compete at my first Olympic Games and I can't believe I'm back here being selected for my second one," said Driscoll.

"I have learned a lot in the last four years and I'm relishing the opportunity to get out there on the big stage again and represent my country the best I possibly can."

Tinkler, who is from Bishop Auckland, will be competing at her first Olympics after making giant strides since progressing to the senior ranks last year.

The 16-year-old is part of a women's artistic team that contains five World Championship medallists, and will be joined by Becky Downie, who is returning for her second Games, and her sister Ellie, who is a four-time Youth Olympics medallist.

The Northern Echo:

The women's team is completed by four-time Commonwealth gold medallist Claudia Fragapane and Ruby Harrold.

"Our gymnasts have enjoyed a very successful four years since London 2012 and the quality of athletes selected today is right up there with the best in the world," said Team GB chef de mission Simon England.

"In particular, the performances over the last 12 months across the disciplines give great promise to what this group can achieve in Rio de Janeiro this summer.

"Gymnastics in Britain is stronger than it has ever been. No doubt that competition for places has pushed each of those selected today to be better athletes and will help them hugely at Rio 2016."
