COUNTY DURHAM sprinter Kieran Maxwell has won a gold medal at the Brazil Paralympic School Games.
Maxwell, who is from Heighington, triumphed in the T42 100m race to confirm his position as a contender for a place at next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio.
The 17-year-old, who trains with Darlington Harriers, was enjoying his first taste of international competition, and posted a time of 15.48secs as he triumphed against some of Brazil’s leading juniors.
Maxwell said: “I really enjoyed myself in Brazil. It’s been an experience like no other. I didn't expect to win my race - all I wanted to do was get a PB. I wasn't expecting to get gold.
“While I was there, I met lots of new and amazing people that I hope to see in the future. It's been an amazing week that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
