NORTH of England and North-East Counties cross country champion Dan Garbutt regained his regional 5,000m crown with a repeat of his 2012 victory at Gateshead International Stadium.

And once again the 25-year-old Durham City Harrier out-sprinted his 33-year-old Morpeth rival, newly-crowned North-East 10,000m champion Peter Newton, to take the gold medal in a time of 14 mins 43.28 secs, winning by just over four seconds in a dogged struggle decided on the final lap.

New Marske Harriers provided three winners in the men’s longer distance events — Dean Newton in the under-20 5,000m (15 mins 49.42 secs), Hassan Ben-Tiba in the under-17 3,000m (9:22.22) and Reece Curtis in the under-15 3,000m (9:44.27).

Birtley’s Great Britain cross country international Lydia Turner, a 3,000m gold medallist at the championships in each of the previous four years, switched to the under-20 1500, winning in 4 mins 26.04 secs, half a second outside her personal best, by over nine seconds.

Birtley also provided the winner of the under-17 race, with Northumberland Schools champion Kate Waugh taking the title in 4 mins 43.57 secs.

Crook’s Markhim Lonsdale, 15-year-old winner of the under-17 1500m the previous day, duly completed a double in the 800m in a time of 2 mins 00.20 secs.

Sunderland Harrier Michael Wilson, 18, was only one hundredth of a second outside the 13-year-old junior men’s 800m record when he clocked 1 min 52.83 secs to collect his sixth championships gold medal over the distance since first winning the under-13 title.

Meanwhile, David Weir turned the tables on Swiss rival Marcel Hug to claim his first win on the final day of the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Nottwil on Sunday, triumphing in the T54 400 metres.

After losing out to Hug in the 800m, 1500m and 10,000m at the Swiss event, the four-time champion beat him to the line by 0.12 seconds in 47.50secs.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve won a 400m. After Beijing I retired from it because I was so disappointed with the final,” said Weir.
