RICHARD BUCK expressed his frustration after he was disqualified in the opening round of the 400m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland.

The City of York runner was involved in an extremely physical heat that saw a number of competitors jostling for position at the start of the final lap.

Despite leading at the bell, Buck dropped back to finish in fourth position and would not have qualified anyway, but to rub salt into the wounds, he was disqualified for obstructing an opponent.

The 27-year-old will now attempt to regroup before lining up as part of Britain’s 4x400m relay squad over the weekend.

“It’s really strange indoors because you accept a lot of physicality in the race,” said Buck. “From my perspective, I’ve been on the inside of somebody doing that to me and, if you’re on the inside, nine times out of ten, you win that battle. But this time, at the World Indoors, there’s a lot at stake.

“It hasn’t affected the result, but I am surprised at the disqualification because, for me, there wasn’t enough contact. It could have gone the other way, but hopefully I’ll get a chance to redeem myself in the relay.”
