SUPERSUB Danny Mellanby turned in a vintage secondhalf performance to give Newton Aycliffe a perfect start to the season in a 3-0 second division victory at North Shields.
Ironically, the former Darlington forward, one of the players behind Aycliffe’s rise from nowhere in recent seasons, wouldn’t have been on the field if summer signing Warren Byrne hadn’t been sent off for making a gesture at Shields fans just yards in front of the assistant referee..
Aycliffe boss Alan Oliver said: “Danny scored an absolute belter to put us in the lead, and he ran Shields ragged. Even though he’s had plenty of injuries, he’s still a great player at this level and is pretty sharp.”
Both sides cancelled each other out in the first half, but Mellanby put the visitors in the lead within a minute of the restart, with a low shot across Shields keeper Michael Patterson.
Shields had Paul Watson dismissed for a professional foul on Sean Tarling, and they disintegrated.
Fred Woodhouse charged down a Patterson clearance for a simple second on 83 minutes, then Woodhouse set up Josh Knox for a tap in.
In the first division, tenman West Auckland snatched a last-minute winner to end promoted Stokesley’s fightback.
Mattie Moffat charged down Ben Escritt’s clearance after 17 minutes to give West the lead, and just after halftime he scored the second from an Andrew Green cross.
Stokesley’s Lev Yalcin scored a 40-yard screamer, and after Moffat was dismissed for swearing, Yalcin equalised with a lob over West keeper Mark Bell.
West caught Stokesley on the break late in the game when Steve Brown played a one-two with new signing Garry Barnes and scored the winner.
Former Darlington winger Nathan Mulligan marked his return to Norton by scoring the winner at Ashington with a deflected shot after 53 minutes.
Bishop Auckland lost 3-2 at home to Penrith.
The Cumbrians were 3-0 up by the 48th minute with goals by James Earl, Grant Davidson and Craig Wilson. Bishops pulled a goal back through Gavin Barton from an Adam Emson cross, then Emson curled in a second in stoppage time.
Alex Benjamin scored a hat-trick in Bedlington’s 4-2 win at South Shields.
Duncan O’Brien put Shields into the lead, but Benjamin scored with a header and a strike from ten yards.
Tony Stephenson equalised, and the goal of the game was scored by Dave Southern with a 25 yarder into the top corner.
Benjamin wrapped it up when he ran through and beat the keeper.
Promoted Jarrow Roofing were denied by a late Dunston goal in a 3-3 draw. Craig Nelson put Roofing in front after 70 seconds and he scored another after 11 minutes.
Stephen Pickering pulled a goal back after 17 minutes, but Hughes made it 3-1.
Chris Laws slid the ball home for Dunston, and in second- half stoppage time he converted a penalty.
Consett scored twice in the last five minutes for a 2-1 home win over Tow Law.
Graham Wilson fired into the bottom corner early in the game but Consett levelled with six minutes left with a deflected free kick by Jamie Poole, and in the last minute scored the winner through new signing Jordan Hugill.
Whitley Bay won 2-0 at Ryton, who missed a penalty through Craig Marron. Paul Robinson put Whitley into the lead with a shot on the turn, then Adam Johnston ran through and scored.
Billingham Synthonia shared the points in a goalless draw against West Allotment, who played three-quarters of the game with ten men after Paul Gardiner was dismissed for a foul on Richie Storr.
Billingham Town held out against a late Esh Winning rally and won 2-0. Marcus Laing scored to put Town into an interval lead, but had to withstand some strong Esh pressure before Craig Norman volleyed the second.
Newcastle Benfield hit the highest score of the day in the division when they thumped promoted Sunderland RCA 5- 0. Former Newcastle junior Guy Bates put Benfield ahead, and further goals came from John Campbell (2), Richie Paxton and Bates.
In other second division matches, Guisborough cruised to a 5-1 home win over Horden.
David Onions opened the scoring from a Luke Bythway pass, then former Horden player Chris I’Anson fired the second.
Bythway scored from a rebound off the bar for 3-0, then Austin Johnson added the fourth before half time.
Anthony Davies pulled one back for Horden, but they went 5-1 down when Bythway scored another in the second half.
Horden’s Anthony Hume missed a penalty.
Marske United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hebburn.
They started well, with Hebburn defender Robbie Blemmings slicing an Adam Gell cross into his own net, but they faded after that, and after Hebburn had a goal disallowed, Marc Brocklehurst headed a deserved equaliser.
Crook Town beat nine-man Washington 2-0 at the Millfield.
Crook took the lead with an effort by Anthony Dobell from just inside the box, then it all went wrong for Washington.
Midfielder David Lamb went off injured after 25 minutes, Jamie Dawson was sent off after 35 minutes and Dean Fox was red-carded after 55 minutes.
They managed to hang on, even though Crook’s Neil Campbell missed a penalty, until youngster Haydon Pace beat two players and scored the second.
Relegated Chester-le-Street beat Seaham Red Star 3-0.
Robbie Draper gave them a great start with a goal inside the first five minutes, but they didn’t score another against a stubborn visiting side until late in the game, when Gary Shields, broke through and scored.
Nicky Kane got the third after dribbling through.
Whickham won 3-2 at Northallerton.
The home side took a seventh- minute lead through Stuart Hardy, but they failed to deal with a long throw and Scott Robson equalised.
Scott Swanston put Whickham into the lead with a deflected shot midway through the second half, then Sam McIntosh charged down a clearance by keeper Alex Kell for the third.
Steve Allison scored a late consolation.
Thornaby beat Darlington RA 1-0 at Teesdale Park, Jonathan Lake scoring the only goal of the game after nine minutes, but the RA missed some good chances in the second half.
