Darlington have sacked Steve Staunton as manager.
In a statement released this morning chairman Raj Singh explained he had no alternative following yesterday's home defeat to Barnet.
It was watched by the club's lowest league attendance for 17 years and the loss represented the 17th in Staunton's 23-game tenure.
Singh said: "It was a disappointing performance and result, but the most disappointing side to yesterday was the attendance - a record low crowd told us a lot.
"We desperately wanted things to work out for Steve but it clearly wasn't to be and we'll have to take stock again. Our search for a new manager starts straight away."
Staunton was appointed as sucessor to Colin Todd in October but was unable to lift Quakers frmo the bottom of League Two and Darlington are heading for relegation.
Singh, who is yet to announce season ticket details for 2010-11, is looking to appoint a new manager quickly to give him as much time as possible ahead of next season.
In the meantime Craig Liddle and Neil Maddison are likely to take charge for Tuesday's home game with Aldershot Town.
