DAVID MEYLER starts against Man City this afternoon after Lee Cattermole failed to prove his fitness.
Lorik Cana serves the first of a two match suspension with Meyler returning to the starting line-up after completing a three game ban.
He will partner Kieran Richardson in the heart of midfield with Steve Bruce otherwise sticking with the side who beat Bolton 4-0 last Tuesday.
Jordan Henderson is included among the subs but Benjani is not eligible to play against City leaving Bruce seriously short of striking options.
Former Boro star Adam Johnson is on the visitors' bench.
