FOLLOWING his record-breaking 100m run at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin on Sunday, American Tyson Gay has confirmed that he will attend the final event of the UK outdoor athletics season - the Aviva British Grand Prix at the Gateshead International Stadium on Monday, August 31.
Gay broke his own US national record of 9.77 secs on Sunday night, posting an incredible time of 9.71 secs and taking the silver medal behind a world-record performance from Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who won in 9.58 secs.
One of the strongest sprint athletes in the world, Gay has already posted the year’s best 200m time of 19.58 secs. Ahead of defending his 200m and 4 x 100m relay World Championship titles, won in Osaka two years ago, Gay announced that he will again visit the UK before the end of the season.
The Aviva British Grand Prix will be Gay’s second race in the UK this season, following his 200m win at Crystal Palace in July as part of the Aviva London Grand Prix. He has good memories of the Gateshead track, having won the 200m there last year in a time of 20.26 secs.
"This will only be my second time racing at Gateshead.” said the 27-year-old.
“I'm looking forward to heading to the North-East, especially after the great atmosphere in London last month.”
