NEWCASTLE UNITED are braced for a fresh move from Manchester United to land midfielder Sean Longstaff - as Brazilian striker Joelinton arrives on Tyneside.

The Red Devils’ interest in Longstaff has been well documented since the season came to a close last season and they have tested the water to hear what it would take to secure his services.

But Manchester United will not be looking to pay the £50m valuation that Newcastle have of the academy graduate, who made his return to action in the Asia Trophy after recovering from knee surgery.

Now the Old Trafford club’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has decided against heading to Shanghai with the rest of the travelling party so he can concentrate on pulling off transfer deals.

Longstaff is one of those, although Harry Maguire is the main target. Like Newcastle, Leicester have their valuation in mind and will play hardball because they are not players that either club wants to lose.

That said, though, Newcastle will also know that Manchester United are desperate to get more signings over the line to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having decided to turn in a different direction with their recent transfer policy.

Longstaff is seen as the midfielder who can knit things together in the middle for United, even though he has only made nine Premier League appearances, and his suitors think aroundn £30m is more acceptable.

New Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce would love to work with the young talent. He does have other midfield options in the form of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Jack Colback, but Longstaff is certainly one he would like to keep provided there isn’t silly money offered.

Bruce is hoping to hear that the deal for Hoffenheim striker Joelinton has been concluded within the next 24 hours.

A £36m deal is in place for the Brazilian and terms are supposed to have been agreed with the players’ representatives too.

He has arrived in the North-East to undergo a medical and finalise things. Newcastle are just expected to confirm the transfer and they are also confident of landing a couple more players at least.

Vasco da Gama’s 20-year-old forward Marrony is the latest to have emerged as a target, having been watched regularly by chief scout Steve Nickson.

Sporting Lisbon are also linked with the South American and Newcastle are aware of a release clause in Marrony’s contract for 35m euros.

Newcastle are back in the North-East now and are preparing for the first friendly on UK soil at Hibernian next Tuesday. By that time it would be a surprise if there was not more than one new addition, given the transfer window closes in a little more than two weeks’ time.

St James’ Park chiefs are also facing a battle with Sheffield Wednesday over the appointment of Bruce as head coach.

Sheffield Wednesday have reported Newcastle to the Premier League for their conduct during their pursuit of Bruce.

Bruce was announced as boss last Wednesday, just 48 hours after he resigned from his position at the Owls, along with coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence.

Wednesday insist some legal issues were still outstanding when Bruce was confirmed and they have now registered their discontent at the behaviour with the governing body.

“Following Newcastle United’s announcement on 17 July 2019 of its appointment of former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, the club confirms that it has today reported Newcastle United’s conduct to the Premier League,” the Championship club said in a statement.

Bruce was only in charge of Sheffield Wednesday for 18 games after he as given the job in February.

Wednesday’s statement added: “As the Premier League will now initiate and carry out investigations into the club’s allegations, the club will not be commenting further on this matter whilst such investigations are ongoing.”
