TONY PULIS has made signing at least one new striker a priority before the start of the new season next month.

The summer transfer window closes three weeks earlier than normal this year and deals will have to be concluded on Thursday, August 9.

Boro have only made two key signings so far this summer, centre-back Aden Flint and versatile midfielder Paddy McNair .

Pulis wants to get a striker through the door sooner rather than later. Burnley’s Sam Vokes, Ipswich’s Martyn Waghorn and FC Zurich’s Michael Frey have been heavily linked so far.

Pulis, speaking after his side beat Sandhausen 1-0 in Germany on Saturday, said: “We need to get one or two players in, that’s important, but we’ve got to make sure they are the right players. We’d like to bring one or two others in if they are available and if we can.

“Sometimes you have to wait a little bit and see what happens and see what spins around. We’ll see how it goes – we’ve got three weeks to get a few deals done.”

Waghorn’s goal return for Ipswich last season has made him hot property in the Championship and Ipswich want to keep him.

But if their valuation was met then the former Sunderland and Rangers front-man would be on his way.

Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham have all been credited with an interest in Waghorn. The prospect of playing in his native North-East again could appeal to the man from South Shields.

Ipswich manager Paul Hurst suggested over the weekend that it would take a “lot of money” for them to part with Portman Road’s prize goal-getter.

Last season Ashley Fletcher - who was given a second half role in Germany - spent the second half of it on loan at Sunderland and Pulis has always said that he would never close the door on him being part of the Boro squad.

Middlesbrough close their trip to Germany with a friendly against Augsburg.

They successfully managed to claim a second win of the summer in Mindelheim by overcoming Sandhausen courtesy of a goal from Patrick Bamford, who slotted in a penalty after he was toppled in the box before half-time.
