Saxon Warrior is the one all us jockeys would like to be on in today’s Investec Derby – but he’s no value at around evens or odds-on.

There might be slight question mark over the extra half-mile and there is always uncertainty in the Derby, but I think people are scrambling around for reasons to see him beaten.

That said, if people are looking for a bit of value then I could easily see Sevenna Star running into a place at a big price.

He’s two from two this season, absolutely hacking up at Windsor and then leaving it very late to win the Classic Trial at Sandown. He gave the impression this extra two furlongs will be right up his street and those wins came on easy ground which he will experience at Epsom.

He is trained by a maestro in John Gosden and I am delighted Rab Havlin is having his first ride in the Derby. He’s a jockey who deserves to be riding in Classics and I reckon he could have a great spin around.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Young Rascal ran a big race too. I was very impressed with him at Chester and, as I said before, I think William Haggas and James Doyle is a match made in heaven. It’s also worth noting that it looks like Sheikh Mohammed or his son has let James off riding Dee Ex Bee so he can ride Young Rascal.

I fancy Dark Shot to go very close in the Investec Corporate Banking Dash. He was a short-head second in the race 12 months ago. He’ll only be carrying eight stone given Jamie Gormley is taking 5lb off. He has the plum draw in 19 and he’ll take some pegging back.

I’m at Musselburgh where I have mainly each-way chances. I ride Feathery in the Stobo Castle Ladies' Day Gold Cup Fillies' Stakes for Charlie Fellowes.

She may only have won a handicap last time but I know Charlie rates her and he is sending her up to Scotland for a good reason.

My first ride is on Mecca's Spirit in the Western Toyota 2000GT Heritage Sprint Handicap. She ran well enough on her seasonal debut in April but this extra furlong will be perfect and stall four is good place to attack from.

I had to miss the ride on Mabs Cross in the Temple Stakes last week – I had a kidney stone which was bloody painful – but I was delighted to see her run so well.

It was another step up in class and she only got beaten a length by apparently the best five-furlong horse in the world in Battaash and I think she’ll keep improving. The stiff five furlongs of the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot will really suit and six furlongs later on could also work in her favour.
