FORMER Durham County supremo Geoff Cook will again lead Philadelphia Cricket and Community Club's All-Star programme, assisted by level two coach Lewis Carney and junior co-ordinator Stephen Robinson.

The England and Wales Cricket Board initiative aims to introduce the game to five to eight year olds and this will be the second year it has run.

And in the first week since Phili launched the programme at Newbottle and Penshaw Lady Queen of Peace Schools, more than 20 youngsters signed up.

Carney said: "It's a real fun night and last season the kids loved it. We've done a couple of roadshows outside schools, talking to parents and informing them how to register youngsters. We'll be visiting more schools in the next couple of weeks".

Cook, the Bunker Hill club's Director of Cricket, is enthusiastic about the benefits of the scheme.

"Not much cricket is taught in state schools these days so it's important that clubs do whatever they can to let parents know what they have to offer,’’ he said.

"Philadelphia is at the forefront of getting out into the community and this season the club will field four junior teams, starting at under 11, so there are opportunities for the All Stars youngsters to progress into the competitive game."

The sessions will take place on Fridays from June 8 - July 27 from 5.30 - 6.30 pm Any parent wanting more information is asked to contact Austin Carney at austin@rufus.co.uk.

All youngsters who sign up will be given a voucher for a free one-hour jump session at the Infinite Air extreme trampoline at the Belmont Business Park.
