NEWCASTLE UNITED progressed in the Premier League International Cup at Sunderland’s expense after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

There was nothing between the two Under-23s sides after extra-time when the score was level at 2-2 and then it took until the 24th spot-kick for the Magpies to go on.

Sunderland's Jake Hackett cruelly was the man to miss the crucial penalty leaving Newcastle to celebrate a home semi-final tie against Porto.

Newcastle took the lead through Curtis Good but Lynden Gooch then scored a goal in each half to put Sunderland in command.

However, the highly-rated Callum Roberts forced extra-time with a brilliant free-kick at the Stadium of Light in injury time.

Newcastle then went on to win the penalty shoot-out 11-10 after Hackett had put his second effort over Paul Woolston's bar.

The Wear-Tyne meeting at Under-23s level was marred earlier in the game when a number of seats were ripped up in the away end after the goal.
