BOBSLEIGH duo Mica McNeill and Mica Moore provided a timely dose of British girl power as they drove themselves into medal contention.

On a night in which Elise Christie cemented her status as arguably the nation's unluckiest winter Olympian with yet another short track speed skating failure, the lively Mica's ended matters with a late boost for the team.

It seems that sliding down, rather than across the ice, is what Britain are best at in PyeongChang as the women's bobsledders picked up from where the skeleton lot – with their haul of one gold and two bronze – left off.

The girls find themselves sixth at the half-way stage of the competition, just 0.16 seconds off the podium – and they promised there is still more to come.

It is all the more remarkable given the duo's battle just to get to the start line in South Korea after they had to rely on the generosity of the public when an administrative error by their national governing body left them unfunded on the eve of the season.

“We have thought about the public's support all season,” said McNeill, from Consett, who saw £30,000 raised through crowdfunding within just a week of their appeal going out.

“We have so much support back home, it's got the public involved in our journey. And that's something we think about daily.

"We are over the moon with our performances so far. It's a four-heat race so we've still got a lot to focus on before the final two heats.

“We're brand new to this track so we're still learning and there's a couple of bits to improve on.

“We've got more in the tank for the start definitely and there's a few little bits to tidy up on the drive.

“We said before we got here that we just wanted to enjoy it, we worked so hard to get here and that's what we're doing. We've had so much fun today and we want to carry that on.”

The enthusiasm of the two is infectious and you can't help but take a liking to their bubbly personalities.

Both are lapping up their maiden Olympic Games experience too, although don't mistake their laughter and smiles for a lack of drive.

“It's been incredible here,” she added. “It's our first Olympics. We're so happy to be here and I think that's just helping our performance.

“We are just enjoying the moment as these things don't come around that often. We want to do the best we can do.”
