HARTLEPOOL UNITED secured a rare and welcome home victory as they saw off Woking at Victoria Park.

Two late goals from the visitors gave the scoreline a flattering look as Pools were in complete control as they took the game to the visitors and took their chances.

Pools had not won at home on a Saturday since September 9 and they can go to Halifax on Tuesday with some much-needed belief from a solid display.

A loose ball on the edge of the area wasn’t dealt with and Devante Rodney showed composure, took a touch and cracked a low finish home.

On 34 minutes, Pools doubled their lead.

Pools returned a corner to the area, and Jake Cassidy turned and fired in a rising shot from 18 yards.

It should have been three when a Pools counter saw Michael Woods pick out Rodney, but he blasted over.

On 43 minutes, it was three.

Connor Newton chipped the ball into the area and Rhys Oates got in front of static keeper Baxter to head home.

The visitors got one back on 84 minutes through Reece Grego-Cox’s low shot. In injury time a close-range header from Edwards made it 3-2.

Boss Craig Harrison said: “It’s a good feeling, the important thing is scoring three times and could have had more. We didn’t quite finish them off.

“I’m pleased to get a win, the fans have endured a lot of tough times in the last few weeks, but responded by supporting us. The fund-raising has been fantastic, snowballed to the point where everyone should be proud of helping their club stay afloat.

“We put on an entertaining game, three goals and five, six, seven other chances.

“In the past we have got one and it’s not been enough. Today we got three and we got over the line.

“We got on with it and the lads can be pleased with their display.''
