Goals:

0-1: Quigley (57, robbed Adams of the ball with ease, ran at goal and fired low across goal into the far corner)

0-2: Quigley (78, from a Pools corner, the visitors broke away, picked Pools off and Quigley ran from halfway to net)

Booking: Hawkins (15, foul)

Referee: Matt Donohue (Manchester): Pools had a couple of half-hearted penalty appeals knocked back, but referee was firm 6

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-3-3):

5 Loach: Under his share of pressure, and couldn’t be do much with the goals as he was left exposed by those in front of him;

5 Magnay: Got stuck in early on and helped lift the crowd a bit, but soon dragged into the malaise which lingers over the team

3 Laing: A central defender by trade, but he doesn’t defend his goal, his area or his half with any authority. Passed the ball along the back four more than anything else

5 Donnelly: He looked like he wanted to defend, making interceptions, blocks and tackles while those around him failed to do so

3 Adams: What on earth was he thinking of in gifting Wrexham the opening goal? A woeful decision not to lump the ball out of play;

3 Hawkins: Another game, another outing when he made no impact on proceedings. Had a shot from 25 yards which went way over and that apart it’s hard to recall any involvement

4 Featherstone: Always looked for the ball in manner he does, but was rusty and slack in possession, struggling at times in midfield to get the ball down which is unlike him as he’s normally so assured

4 Woods: Never got going, and Pools need him playing well to make the midfield become any sort of effective unit. Didn’t make the runs and sharp passing he is capable of;

5 Rodney: Looked lively on occasions, but when it mattered – in the penalty area – he was found desperately wanting again. Always second best to the ball in any challenge

5 Cassidy: Alone and isolated, how he needed support from teammates, but in this system he’s not going to get much from others

4 Deverdics: If he’s not creating – and delivering good dead balls – he needs to get involved in open play and he was absent.
