CRAIG HARRISON is looking to add a new striker to his Hartlepool United ranks.

Pools were largely dominant at Wrexham in midweek, but were unable to convert their best chances into goals.

Defensively, Pools have eradicated the mistakes which cost them at the start of the season, and have kept three clean sheets in four unbeaten games.

But Harrison is now turning his attentions to the other end.

“It’s clear at this moment in time we are missing something in front of goal,’’ he mused. “Franksy has contributed with goals, Rhys Oates is just getting fit again and then we have a 17-year-old in Connor Simpson.

“Devante Rodney is 19 and we are relying on those for goals. They have been good, but we are looking for more and trying to find the right one.’’

Pools are a striker down following the departure of Padraig Amond to Newport County. He has scored two for his new club and Harrison added: “Podge left not so long ago, Jake Cassidy has been injured and will be out for another six-seven weeks which is disappointing. We need a solution and are trying to get someone in, but strikers who score 25 goals a season don’t grow on trees.

“It’s about picking the right one for the right environment, we need to look at a players’ character and what he is all about. Will he fit in? Will he work hard?

“That’s as important as anyone else. It’s a project for myself, Jenks and Batesy to try and get someone in.’’

The loan arrival of centre-half Keith Watson from St Johnstone has strengthened the defence, while Michael Ledger, who is on a season-long loan from Sunderland has also impressed.

Harrison added: “At the other end of the pitch we have defended well. The centre-halves have performed and the back four have been brilliant.

“Devs isn’t a left-back, but has fitted in well and has great delivery, Scotty Loach has been magnificent and Mags is Mags – a real solid defender, experienced and a good lad in the dressing room. A solid, all-round professional.

“They have kept three clean sheets in four and defended well. It’s a big contribution from them.’’

Pools impressed in North Wales in midweek, against a team who have started the season well and expect to be amongst the promotion challengers.

The woeful display at home to Fylde almost three weeks ago is a thing of the past as Harrison and his players have turned things around in both results and performances.

Ahead of tomorrow’s game at Orient, he added: “We took a point and could have had more – reviewing the game back and we had the best opportunities. It was tough for defenders, but we were happy with a clean sheet, if disappointed we didn’t win the game as we had the best opportunities and the lions’ share of possession.

“But they haven’t got the best defence in the league for nothing. It’s five games since they conceded a goal now and we had a lot of chances. The best one was when Devante had a chance, he picked his spot and snatched at it a bit, but still made the keeper make a save.

“It’s four unbeaten and we are building foundations and carry on doing what we are doing. We won’t get ahead of ourselves and start thinking we are better than we are.

“Make a mistake, lose and you ask why the unbeaten run is over – well it’s because we stop doing the things we were doing, the things which got you the result in the first place.

“It’s down to hard work, we are the hardest working team in this division and we will continue to be so.’’
