RAFA BENITEZ is determined to stay focused on delivering the points as Newcastle United manager by leaving transfer business in the hands of managing director Lee Charnley.

The Magpies are preparing for Sunday’s trip to Huddersfield Town knowing they could still do with more players despite adding Spanish striker Joselu to the ranks this week.

But Benitez, who was told he would have the money he wanted to spend after sealing promotion last May, has also been left in no doubt that he must offload players first.

But Newcastle are struggling to sell players on, with Jack Colback, Grant Hanley, Henri Saivet, Tim Krul and Massadio Haidara among those he would prefer to have off the wage bill.

But Benitez said: “We know where we are, we know the way to move forward and to keep doing our job every day with the team, every session, and try to do something in market to move players in and out.

“We have to carry on with our normal business but the window is like this, the market is like this, we have to stay calm and try to do our job.

“We always have a lot of players to move out before we can move in. It is too early to say if the work behind the scenes is good. We will see.”

Benitez will have to make a few changes to his side to face Huddersfield because of injuries sustained by Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett. Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is also facing a three match ban because of his stamp on Dele Alli during the 2-0 defeat to Spurs.

Benitez has revealed that Shelvey is receiving help to improve his attitude, while admitting Mike Merino is in line to replace him at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Newcastle boss said: “Jonjo knows he made a mistake and everyone agrees with that. He is the first one that wants to change wants to improve. We have been working on that and so is he. You cannot predict or prevent, we are working on that.

“The situation is not what you are expecting so you have to keep going to give the right message. At the end it depends on one second when he loses control.

“He knows. It depends on him and those around him. If we win three games in a row then we will not talk about team selection, we will talk about how many times we can repeat the team. We will talk about the situation later. The players understand they try to help him but at the same time he is important and he has to behave as well.”
