GARRY MONK is targeting the ‘complete performance’ from new-look Middlesbrough after watching his players secure a second successive win at the Riverside Stadium inside four days.

Boro’s record buy Britt Assombalonga found the net in each half to get off the mark on a personal level following his £15m move from Nottingham Forest.

And his double was enough to earn Middlesbrough a second victory from three matches under Monk, who has noted his side getting better game-by-game since the new season got underway with a defeat at Wolves on August 5.

Monk said: "I'm happy with the result and back-to-back wins are important in this league and a clean sheet.

“In all the games we've been very good defensively but in terms of the game we didn't start too well and gave them a bit too much confidence just the way we were with the ball but once we got to grips with that we were good.

“We're playing in patches but in the good patches we look incredibly dangerous and that's what we're striving for, to win games.

"I'm pleased with the three points and we're getting ready for the next game. We're improving game on game and you can see what we're trying to do offensively and defensively.”

Assombalonga’s brace against Burton followed on from Rudy Gestede’s winner on Saturday against Sheffield United and those have geared the team up nicely for this weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Gestede impressed against the Brewers again while there was also a lively performance from Patrick Bamford as part of a three-pronged attack.

And with Ashley Fletcher on the bench and Martin Braithwaite to come back from injury in a few weeks, Monk clearly has options in the final third.

The Middlesbrough boss said: “You could see how dangerous we were. We should have taken more of those chances and been more ruthless but it's early days.

“We're not having complete performances but that's understandable. It takes time and hard work but the players are ready for that and their attitude is excellent. I'm pleased for the group and pleased with the results.

"I like to play on the front foot aggressive football that's what we want while being defensively good and striking that balance is what we want. We want to put it into a complete performance but that will come with time as this team grows.”

Having paid £15m to bring Assombalonga to the Riverside, it was nice for Monk to see the expensive recruit find the net in a Middlesbrough shirt for the first time in his third appearance.

Monk said: "It was important for Britt to get off the mark. He looked very dangerous. If I was going to be critical we should have been more ruthless but I'm confident that will come.

“The whole team and not just the ones playing, but others who haven't played many minutes are all very motivated.

"My criticism is that we should have had some more. People are contributing and for me it doesn't matter who scores. They're making good improvements and strides forward.

“We want to be better every time we go on the pitch. The plan we have is coming out and hopefully that's exciting for the fans.”

Monk’s recruitment drive suffered frustration when Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo opted to head for Fulham despite a deal being agreed earlier in the summer with the Teessiders. The manager is not concerned, though, with other targets in mind.

He said: "We have a couple of areas we're looking for that we're well aware of. We've been smart with our recruitment and we've moved a few out but there's still some positions we need to fill. Hopefully the window closes sooner rather than later.”

Middlesbrough hope to conclude a deal for Birmingham defender Ryan Shotton before the weekend too after agreeing a fee in the region of £3m. Asked if the 28-year-old will be moving to the Riverside, Monk said: "It's a position we need to strengthen and possibly another position, we have our targets and we want to get them in as soon as possible.”
