GARRY MONK is delighted Middlesbrough have got his first season “up and running” with three points after a hard-earned victory over Sheffield United.

Monk was keen to see Boro win their first home game of the season and they did so courtesy of Rudy Gestede’s 20th minute winner.

There were some nervy moments in the second half when the Blades threatened – and had a debatable goal ruled out for offside in the dying seconds.

But Middlesbrough, who opened the campaign in defeat at Wolves last week, held on and claimed a first victory under the new boss.

Monk said: "I was very pleased for everyone at the club, the fans the players the owner everyone at the club. It was a difficult season last season so in terms of having that winning mentality it was important to get that win early and we've managed it in the first home game.

"You saw exactly what we were capable of in the first half. We started with good intensity and energy and showed what we're capable of against a side who hadn't lost since January. Of course there's improvements to be made but the season's up and running.”

He reserved special praise for Gestede, who many feel could move on this month after a summer of spending. Monk suggested no player will be ignored if they deserve to be involved.

He said: "Rudy was excellent, all the lads are willing each other to do well and that's the type of spirit we're trying to create. I've got some difficult decisions to make. Rudy has done well.

"No-one's forgotten in my mind, the squad's vitally important, we're trying to shape it what we need and especially in the first half you saw what we're capable of. Of course there's a lot of work to go to produce that level for longer periods. It's only three points and we're keen to put in back to back performances.”

Sheffield United’s late equaliser – an own goal from Dael Fry - was ruled out because Jack O’Connell was deemed to be offside.

But Monk said: "I'm told it's the correct decision, it wasn't a foul in the first place for the free-kick.”
