Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley says that Moors are six points towards their safety target as they make the trip to Lincolnshire to face Boston United this afternoon.

Moors couldn‘t have asked for a better start to the season with excellent wins over Stockport and FC United of Manchester in their first two matches in the Vanarama National League North, but Ainsley is playing down any early promotion hopes and instead concentrating on survival in a very competitive league.

“Our first week has given us some breathing space,” he said. “I know that a few people are getting excited, but our main aim is this season is staying in this league, and making sure that we stabilise and build for the future. The early points have taken some of the pressure off. We didn’t want to be going into third game without a point.

“So to me, we are six points closer to safety, which is usually around the 40 point mark. It is early days, and the players are running on adrenaline.”

Boston are currently seventh bottom, having lost their opening game and then beaten Alfreton in midweek. “Boston will be a totally different test to Stockport and FC United,” said Ainsley. “They’re a big physical side, and they play differently to the two teams that we’ve played so far. We will have to show the ugly side to our game.

“There were a lot of boxes ticked in midweek at FC United. To lose a two goal lead, but then bounce back to lead 3-2 and see the game out proves that the players have great character, and don’t know when to give up.

“That was a massive three points for us, because FC United are a good team at home. It was a great experience going there, because the atmosphere is very loud, and it’s nice for the players to know that they can compete at a place like that.

“One thing that is very obvious, that we will have to work hard for every point.”

Central defender James Curtis is out because of injury so Chris Mason will probably deputise, while midfielders Ryan Hall and Mark Anderson are both doubtful.

Striker Graeme Armstrong has returned from holiday and is now back in the reckoning.
