A BOXING apprentice electrician is hoping to land a telling combination in and out of the ring.
Mick Hadfield, 18, is one of only 15 British boxers selected for the 2012 London Olympics training squad, and is confident of winning a medal at the European under-19 championships in Sombor, Serbia, in July.
Away from the boxing ring, Mick - who has just completed the first year of his electrician's apprenticeship - has so impressed his company with his hard work and positive attitude that it has nominated him for an award recognising learning excellence.
If short-listed, he will be invited to the Learning and Skills Council ceremony at the Sage, in Gateshead, in October, hosted by TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher.
Mick, who works for Gus Robinson Developments, in Hartlepool, said: "I am aiming to go to the Olympics and I will take it from there. It is too early to say that I would like to turn professional after that, so the sensible thing is to work hard at my career as well."
He began boxing aged 11 and has won the Junior Amateur Boxing Association title three times and the Home Nations championship twice. He won a silver medal in the world under17s and was one of just four young fighters chosen to take part in a boxing master class in Cuba.
