SUNDERLAND (4-3-3):

6 Pickford: Didn’t have a chance with either of West Ham’s goals and made a decent early save from Lanzini

6 Jones: Made some useful surges down the flank before he was forced off with concussion, but lost Collins for West Ham’s second goal

7 Denayer: Handled Carroll’s aerial threat reasonably effectively and currently looks a much better bet than the out-of-form Kone

6 O’Shea: Coped fairly well on his return to the side, with his lack of pace not really being tested by a one-paced Hammers attack

6 Manquillo: Slotted in at left-back to replace the injured Oviedo and made some effective breaks down the touchline

5 Gibson: Didn’t have much of an influence prior to providing the cross that eventually led to Borini’s goal

7 Cattermole: Had to tread a fine line after his first-minute booking, but kept his composure well and was always a battling presence

5 Ndong: Gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions and failed to find the target with a great second-half chance

9 KHAZRI: Clearly had a point to prove on his return to the side and was involved in all of Sunderland’s best moments, even if his goal was a fluke

5 Defoe: Not one of the striker’s most productive days as he was well shackled in the area by Collins and Fonte

6 Anichebe: His presence makes a massive difference to the Sunderland attack, but he should have done better against Collins for West Ham’s second
