ANDREW NELSON, the Sunderland attacker on loan at Hartlepool United, has had his season cut short.

Nelson lasted only four minutes as a late substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Plymouth as he damaged knee ligaments in a challenge.

And scans have revealed a problem with his medial knee ligament, meaning he is back at the Academy of Light for treatment and he won’t play again this season.

He made his first four senior appearances for the club, and impressed in a wide-right role on his debut against Yeovil, coming days after he moved on loan at the end of the January transfer window.

Nelson used social media yesterday to thank Pools for the experience and to wish the club all the best for the experience.

Pools boss Dave Jones, who this week allowed defender Harly Wise to exit after his short-term deal ran out, said: “It’s so unfortunate for Andrew and for us.

“He’s come here looking to gain some senior experience, had done well in the games he’s played and has slotted in well with the rest of the lads.’’

Pools go to Colchester on Saturday before back to back home games on Tuesday and Saturday against Crewe and Exeter respectively.

The club has put tickets on offer, with a free ticket for the Exeter game for anyone who buys one for the Crewe game.

Those games will go a long way to shaping Pools’ season and, after an improved performance and atmosphere at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium last time out, boss Jones is hoping for more.

“Everyone was commenting about how good the atmosphere was on Saturday and we want more of that now,” Jones said.

“Getting that backing is going to be crucial in our run-in and hopefully this great deal will enable more fans to come and along and get behind the players.

“We have a very young side and they need all the encouragement the fans can give them – you saw how much of an impact it had during Saturday’s game.’’

The offer is available from the club’s ticket office.
