NORTH FERRIBY 1 GATESHEAD 0

GATESHEAD suffered a disappointing weekend as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to North Ferriby United, with their opponents climbing off the foot of the National League table as a result of their win at Grange Lane.

The Heed were the dominant side in the early stages of the game, but Patrick McLaughlin and Danny Johnson both wasted good chances to break the deadlock.

Their profligacy was punished in the 31st minute as Reece Thompson stabbed him Taron Hare’s cross from the left-hand side.

Gateshead continued to create chances in the second half, but Johnson hit the post with a close-range header and Manny Smith had a headed effort disallowed for offside.

The result means North Ferriby have completed the double over Gateshead, and leaves Neil Aspin’s side without a point or a goal from their last three matches.

“We should have scored, but we didn’t,” said Aspin. “I said before the game that whoever got the first goal would go on to win the game, and once they had scored it gave them something to defend. They did well to keep a clean sheet.”
