TRANMERE ROVERS 1 YORK CITY 0

YORK CITY’s misery continued as a stoppage-time concession at Tranmere Rovers sent them crashing to the foot of the National League table.

The Minstermen’s spirited display looked like securing a much-needed point, but James Norwood’s last-gasp header condemned them to defeat at lifted Tranmere to the Conference summit.

The defeat was harsh on a York side who matched their opponents for long periods at Prenton Park, with Rhys Murphy testing Tranmere goalkeeper Scott Davies in the opening stages.

York goalkeeper Kyle Letheren had to be alert shortly after, turning Norwood’s header around the post, but the visitors continued to push after the interval with debutant Jon Parkin, who signed from Newport County last week, almost lobbing Davies from long range.

A draw would have been fair on both sides, but Tranmere claimed all three points deep into stoppage time when Norwood headed home.

“I don’t want to be harsh on my players because I thought we were excellent,” said Mills. “I can’t talk about what went on before I came to the club, although possibly I can, but I thought that this was the first time we’ve played as a team and looked like a team.

“It’s just taken a couple of players that know what it’s all about to help us be that team. We can take a lot from the game, but now we need to reproduce it.

“We’ve got to make sure that in two weeks’ time, when the next league game comes around against Torquay United, we demonstrate the same drive and desire, along with doing our jobs properly and being organised, to win the game.”
