1-0: Reid (90, drilled a low left foot strike inside Pickford’s bottom corner through a crowded area)

Bookings: Rodwell (26, dissent); Ndong (27, foul); Fernandes (31, foul); Pienaar (40, foul); Reid (68, foul); Khazri (83, foul)

Attendance: 56,985

WEST HAM UNITED (3-4-2-1): Adrian 6; Reid 7, Kouyate 7, Ogbonna 6; Antonio 6 (Feghouli 62, 5), Noble 7, Obiang 5, Fernandes 6; Lanzini 5 (Fletcher 84), PAYET 8; Zaza 4 (Calleri 68, 5). Subs (not used): Spiegel (gk), Nordtveit, Collins, Oxford.

SUNDERLAND (4-3-2-1):

7 PICKFORD: A solid pair of hands from start to finish again and made a couple of important saves too, particularly from Payet in the first half;

6 Manquillo: Improved as the game developed in both a defensive and attacking sense

6 Kone: Looked short of match fitness at times but still did enough to frustrate the Hammers

6 O’Shea: A much-needed figure at the heart of the defence again to offer his experience and guidance to those around him

6 van Aanholt: After a shaky start he improved significantly and was a threat to the Hammers defence;

6 Ndong: Another slow starter on an afternoon when he showed enough to suggest a holding role could be good for him

5 Rodwell: Played things simply even if he could still do with doing more when in possession;

6 Khazri: Frustrated at times with his work-rate but when he was on the ball he caused occasional problems, even if he missed the best chance of the game

5 Pienaar: A surprise to see him playing behind the striker but it was more for his work-rate than his creativity this time around

5 Watmore: Wasted some fantastic opportunities but his presence gave the home side plenty to think about;

5 Defoe: Isolated for the majority of the game on his own and was not picked out enough when he did find space

Subs:

Gooch (for Watmore 74)

McNair (for Pienaar 79)

Jones (for Khazri 86)

Not used: Mika (gk), Djilibodji, Anichebe, Honeyman.

MAN OF THE MATCH: DIMITRI Payet – even on an afternoon when he was short of his best, he was comfortably the most dangerous player on the pitch.
