IRELAND internationals Stuart Poynter and Barry McCarthy have agreed new two-year contracts with Durham.

For McCarthy, a seam bowling all-rounder, it represents promotion from a development contract following a season in which he took his maiden five-wicket haul against Lancashire.

Wicketkeeper Poynter made his first-class debut midway through the summer and played in four championship games.

He was named Second X1 Player of the Year at Thursday night's dinner in Gosforth, when Keaton Jennings walked away with five of the eight awards.

They included Community Player of the Year and the Champagne Moment award for hitting the last two balls of a Royal London Cup tie for six and four when nine runs were needed.

Graham Onions won the bowling award and Paul Coughlin the fielding award.

The dinner was attended by Stockton-born actor Stephen Tompkinson, currently best known for his role as DCI Banks. He has become an ambassador for the Durham Cricket Foundation.
