NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):

6 Darlow: Recalled in place of Sels and couldn’t be blamed for any of Norwich’s three goals as he controlled his goal well

8 Yedlin: Was Newcastle’s best attacker for much of the game as he repeatedly poured forward down the right-hand side

5 Lascelles: Was somewhat unfortunate with the deflection off Murphy, but should have been quicker to close down his opponent

6 Clark: Preferred to Mbemba at the heart of the back four and won most of his aerial challenges

5 Dummett: Shaky on occasion in defence and wasted possession on a number of occasions with some poor passing

8 Shelvey: Pulled all the strings as Newcastle dominated before the break and set up Gayle’s second goal

6 Colback: Restored to the starting line-up in place of Hayden and was a decent foil for Shelvey for much of the night

8 Ritchie: Another superb display from the winger, who delivered the cross for Gayle’s opener and was a threat all night

5 Diame: The one attacking player who didn’t really make an impact – doesn’t look particularly well suited to the ‘number ten’ role

7 Gouffran: Let himself down by conceding a penalty, but more than made amends with his dramatic late header

9 GAYLE: Missed a number of first-half chances, but still walked off with the match ball – repeatedly got in behind the Norwich back four

Subs:

Mitrovic (for Diame, 71)

Hayden (for Colback, 71)

Atsu (for Dummett, 90)

(not used): Sels (gk), Lazaar, Mbemba, Perez.

NORWICH (4-2-3-1):

McGovern 6; Pinto 4, Martin 5, Bassong 4, Olsson 4; Tettey 5, Dorrans 8; Ja Murphy 7 (Bennett 79), Howson 7, Brady  7; Jerome 7 (Oliveira 86).

Subs (not used): Ruddy (gk), Jo Murphy, Thompson, Hoolahan, Naismith.

Man Of The Match: DWIGHT GAYLE – It looked like it would be a frustrating night for the striker when he missed three early chances, but he ended up celebrating one of the most remarkable performances of his career.
