TRAVIS HEAD would love to win a limited overs trophy with Yorkshire and repay the faith shown in him by his fellow Australian Jason Gillespie.

Head forged a close bond with the White Rose coach during their two months together with the Adelaide Strikers earlier this year.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign and earned two T20 international caps for his country on the back of it.

Gillespie even presented him with his cap before his debut against India.

Head has described Dizzy as “a nice calming influence” as a coach and believes that he played a big part in helping him achieve his call-up.

Now, the hard-hitting left-hander is keen to repay the favour by delivering white ball silverware to Headingley, something which has so far eluded Gillespie.

Yorkshire are closing in on the quarter-finals in both the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London one-day Cup after winning nine of their last eleven completed fixtures across both forms.

And Head has made an exceptional start to life as the county’s overseas player during the last fortnight, capped off by scoring a brilliant 175 in Sunday’s RL50 win over Leicestershire at Grace Road.

It was Yorkshire’s second highest ever individual score, only 16 away from matching Darren Lehmann’s 191 in the National League against Notts at Scarborough in 2001.

Ironically, it is Notts who visit the North Marine Road venue today for table-topping Yorkshire’s sixth RL50 group fixture.

“Dizzy’s fantastic, and it’s nice to be back with him over here,” said Head.

“When he came to the Big Bash, I didn’t really know him. But he’s great to have around the group, a nice calming influence. We get along really well.

“When we spoke about game-plans, it was more him telling me to settle in and enjoy myself.

“The positions he got me into with the Strikers, and the freedom he gave me, probably quickened the process up for me playing T20 cricket for Australia.

“I know the white ball stuff, Yorkshire haven’t had the success like they’ve had in four-day cricket. But that’s what we’re here to do. We’re putting ourselves in some brilliant positions for both forms.

“If we beat Notts and win on Friday (at Northants in their final Blast group game), we put ourselves in the hunt for both.

“If we can get to play-offs and play the cricket we have been playing, we’ll be in a strong position.”

Yorkshire have scored 200 plus twice in their last two T20 matches and 376-3 against Leicester in Sunday’s 50-over clash, with Head central to their run spree.

But, ahead of today’s Notts clash, he was keen to praise the bowlers’ efforts, particularly at Grace Road.

He added: “Our bowling at Leicester was class.

“We bowled with aggression and pace and got something out of the pitch, which was nice.

“The pace on the ball that Liam Plunkett and the lads bowled with and the spin in the middle, that bowling performance, in particular, was exceptional.

“The spin almost went unnoticed. We didn’t really need it on Sunday because of the way the quicks bowled at the start.

“But with the class of the two spinners in Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq, we’ve got a great bowling line-up.”
