GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM should be confirmed as a Liverpool player within the next 24 hours after Newcastle United accepted a £25m bid for his services.

As revealed on The Northern Echo website yesterday, a series of intensive negotiations finally produced a breakthrough when Newcastle officials agreed a compromise fee for the Dutch international.

Wijnaldum is expected to attend Newcastle's Longbenton training ground this morning to say his goodbyes to his team-mates, before heading to Merseyside to undergo a medical.

Personal terms have already been agreed, so provided there are no unforseen medical issues, the midfielder should be confirmed as a Liverpool player either this evening or tomorrow.

Wijnaldum made his final appearance in a Newcastle shirt last night, coming off the bench for the final 11 minutes of the Magpies' 2-2 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

His appearance was greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos, and while some fans will be disappointed to see him go, others will feel he could have done more to prevent Newcastle being relegated last season, particularly in matches away from St James' Park.

Having moved to Tyneside in a £14.5m move from PSV Eindhoven, Wijnaldum scored 11 Premier League goals last season, four of which came in a single match against Norwich City.
