ENGLAND (4-2-3-1):

6 Forster:  Only had one save to make, but executed it effectively to deny Kruse – England’s undisputed number two behind Hart

6 Clyne: Reined in some of usual attacking instincts to produce a disciplined defensive display – it will be a close call between him and Walker

6 Smalling: Wasn’t always on the same wave-length as Stones and is part of a back four that continues to give considerable cause for concern

6 Stones: Has struggled with Everton all season, and continues to look low on confidence, but improved as the game went on

6 Bertrand: Made some useful surges up the left-hand side, although it would be a surprise if he got the nod ahead of Rose

5 Wilshere: Still doesn’t look like a natural holding midfielder, and in light of Dier’s emergence, it is hard to see where he best fits into the side

6 Drinkwater: Neat and tidy at the heart of midfield without ever really doing enough to really push his cause – still at real risk of being one of the three to miss out

7 Sterling: Continues to infuriate on occasion, but set up both of England’s goals and added some vibrancy and pace to the attack

6 Lallana: Worked extremely hard and was quick to close down the opposition, but his only shot before being replaced at the break was easily saved

6 Henderson: A couple of speculative long-range efforts didn’t come off, but he was effective enough and is a possible starter against Russia

8 RASHFORD: Couldn’t have made a more explosive impact and produced a high level of performance throughout – a superb debut

Subs:

Rooney (for Lallana, 46): Proved he has lost none of his goalscoring abilities with an excellent second-half strike – not bad for a midfielder 8

Milner (for Wilshere, 46): His versatility remains one of his biggest assets and he slotted into a defensive-midfield role without too much fuss 6

Barkley (for Rashford, 63): Like Stones, he has lost his way dramatically at Everton this season – hard to see him having too much of an involvement in France 5

Dier (for Smalling, 72)

Townsend (for Sterling, 76)

Heaton (for Forster, 86)

(not used): Hart (gk), Walker, Rose, Alli, Kane.

AUSTRALIA (4-1-3-2):

Ryan 5; Risdon 5 (Degenek 74), Wright 4, Milligan 4, Smith 5; Jedinak 6; Mooy 6 (Irvine 83), Rogic 5 (Juric 72), Luongo 5; KRUSE 7 (Goodwin 83), MacLaren 4 (McKay 58, 4).

Subs (not used): Birighitti (gk), Federici (gk), Behich, Mauk, Ikonomidis, Wilkinson.

Man Of The Match: MARCUS RASHFORD – The youngster hadn’t even played a senior game for Manchester United at the start of the year, but there will now be a major outcry if he does not make the squad for France.
