ANDROS TOWNSEND is hoping he has done enough to earn a place in England’s final Euro 2016 squad, even though last night’s 14-minute run-out at Sunderland was his only involvement in the two warm-up games.

Townsend came off the bench in the closing stages at the Stadium of Light, but it remains to be seen whether his efforts were sufficient to persuade Roy Hodgson to include him in the 23-man squad that will be submitted to UEFA on Tuesday.

The Newcastle midfielder was parachuted into the initial 26-man squad despite being unable to keep his club side in the Premier League, and with at least two midfielders likely to be trimmed this week, his place in the final selection remains at risk.

“I’m not too sure,” he said, when asked whether he thought he would make the cut. “You’ll have to ask the manager. But listen, I got ten-to-15 minutes, I've done what I can and if it’s not enough then so be it, but if it is then I'll be delighted.

“It’s not just myself, I think everyone's desperate to go to a major tournament. What a huge honour it would be if I did, but I've done what I can and now we'll see what the manager decides.”

Townsend became the first Newcastle player to play for England for more than six years when he replaced Raheem Sterling in his side’s 2-1 win over Australia, and he hopes he did his club side proud.

“I didn’t know it had been that long, but obviously I'm grateful because I owe a lot to Newcastle for getting me playing Premier League football again and getting me back in the England squad,” he said. “I owe it to them, and hopefully I did Newcastle proud when I came on.”

Townsend’s international run out came just two days after Rafael Benitez agreed to stay on as Newcastle boss, a decision that has been extremely well received by the club’s players.

“It was fantastic news,” said the winger. “Obviously it's no secret how well the manager did towards the end of last season, how well he got us playing. And also how he got me playing well as well and getting me back to the form I've shown. I'm delighted he's signed on for the next three years.”
