DARLINGTON are working on strengthening their title-winning squad in preparation for the National League North with manager Martin Gray having already spoken to several targets.

Immediately after the last two seasons he moved quickly to sign players, and expects to do the same this time around.

While additions will be made, the core of Quakers’ squad will stay together with Leon Scott the first to sign a new contract.

He agreed a two-year deal yesterday, but the manager hinted there will also be some exits.

“I’ve got a bit of talking to do. There’s conversations to have with lots of players over the coming week,” said the manager, whose team will tomorrow evening join supporters in Darlington’s market square to celebrate winning the Northern Premier League.

“But I’m not looking to dismantle the team at all, I’m looking to build on what we’ve done.

“I’m delighted with what the squad’s done this season and what they achieved.

“They were set goals and they achieved them, so I want to keep the core of the team together.

“I want to continue with the philosophies we’ve had since day one which the squad has always bought into.”

Midfielder Phil Turnbull is certain to stay, many supporters’ player of the year.

Gray believes his consistent high level of performances came partly due to assistance from fellow midfielders Tom Portas and Scott.

Gray said: “Phil had to find his feet over the first six-eight weeks, but he ran many a game with his experience and use of the ball.

“The reason he did as well as he did was probably because he had Portas around him with his energy, Leon around him being a bully, and that allowed Phil to be more of a footballer.”

Meanwhile, teenage defender Matty Lovegreen has signed his first contract with Quakers. He this season spent time playing for Norton and Harrogate RA.

*Assistant manager Brian Atkinson as well as a Darlington player will take the Northern Premier League trophy to The Fleece Inn in Northallerton this evening for a question and answer session.

Admission is free and fans will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the trophy at the event, which starts at 8pm.
