DARLINGTON Mowden Park have made two new signings in utility back Caolan Ryan, from Coventry, and New Zealand-born prop James Penman.

While lock Rob Conquest is heading for Coventry, Ryan is coming in the opposite direction. He was man of the match when Mowden recently lost 27-10 at Coventry.

A fly half or full back, he is a product of the Worcester Academy and has played in the Championship for Moseley.

Ryan is also a goal-kicker, which should leave Mowden spoilt for choice in that department as Warren Seals and Garry Law are both staying and Grant Connon might also decide to resume.

Law, who also coaches the backs, said: “Caolan has played Championship rugby at ten and 15 and is an asset we will be looking to use. We had an eye on him and our recent fixture underlined our thoughts.

“We see him playing a massive part in what we hope to achieve on and off the field.”

Penman, 27, spent this season with Plymouth and was in their squad for both matches against Mowden.

Director of Rugby Danny Brown said: “James is not shy when it comes to contact and likes to get his hands on the ball, which suits our style. I'm pretty sure he will become a crowd favourite.”

Plymouth are in administration and Penman said: “They have been very good to me but they are heading in a different direction. I have heard great things about Mowden and my grandmother came from County Durham.”

Newcastle Falcons' Development XV lost their Aviva Premiership A League semi-final 48-15 at Exeter.

International duo Chrysander Botha (3) and Michele Campagnaro (2) led the way for the hosts, while centre Belisario Agulla claimed both of Newcastle’s tries. Fly-half Brett Connon added a conversion and a penalty.

A crowd of almost 2,500 watched the match and Exeter will now entertain Northampton in Monday’s final.
