ANDROS TOWNSEND is set to undergo a medical with Newcastle United in the next 24 hours - and has already said his farewells to his team-mates in Tottenham's Under-21 team.

Newcastle's pursuit of the England international finally achieved a breakthrough early this morning when Spurs officials agreed to the Magpies' £12m offer for the 24-year-old.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had been holding out for at least
£14m for Townsend, who has not started a Premier League game since October 31.

Newcastle had initially been hoping to pay around £10m, but a deal has been agreed that will see an initial payment of around £12m, with potential add ons that could take the final figure to Levy's original target. Townsend will travel to Tyneside within the next 24 hours to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.

There had been talk of a potential alternative move to Southampton, but Newcastle's recruitment team had been tracking Townsend throughout the transfer window and were determined they were not going to lose their man.

Townsend has spent the last two-and-a-half months playing with Spurs' Under-21 team, and he tweeted a farewell message to his development-squad colleagues late last night.

Townsend tweeted: "Been an absolute pleasure playing with the u21 boys the last 3 or 4 months!"

Newcastle remain confident of signing a striker before the transfer window closes next Monday, with Saido Berahino still their number one target despite West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace's refusal to lower his £30m asking price.

If it proves impossible to agree a deal for Berahino, Newcastle will consider signing their former striker, Loic Remy, on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
