NEW boss Neil Aspin watched from the stands as Gateshead recorded only their second win in ten games courtesy of a 1-0 success over Chester City.

Reserve-team boss Micky Cummins took charge in the dug-out, with Ben Clark resuming captaincy duties on the field, and Gateshead produced a much more organised display than the one that resulted in a 4-1 home defeat to Halifax Town in Malcolm Crosby’s final game in charge.

Chester created the best chance of the first half, with Tom Shaw seeing a shot blocked on the line by Simon Ramsden, before directing the rebound against the post.

The visitors went close again with 15 minutes left, but despite enjoying plenty of space in the area, Danny Hattersley could only nod a close-range header straight at goalkeeper Sam Russell.

Gateshead threatened when Jordan Cranston’s deflected strike brought a fine save from Jon Worsnop, and the hosts finally broke the deadlock with eight minutes left.

CJ Hamilton picked up the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area, and his dangerous low shot was turned into his own net by Chester defender Alex Whitmore.

Aspin will now formally take over the reins, and has appointed former Wales international Lee Nogan as his new number two.

Nogan, who played for a number of clubs including York City and has previously managed Whitby Town, worked alongside Aspin at Halifax Town, and will see out a three-week notice period in his current role with the Shaymen before moving to the International Stadium.

“It’s been a very easy decision for me,” said Nogan. “I was over the moon when I received the phone call. I’ve worked with Neil for the last five years. This is his hometown club – he has had a chance to come here in the past, but now is the right time for him.”

Gateshead: Russell, Baxter, Curtis, Clark, Cranston, Ramsden, Mafuta, McLaughlin, Wrightson (Honeyman 62), Bowman, Shaw (Hamilton 12).
