MIDDLESBROUGH’S youth team will attempt to supply some Bonfire Night fireworks of their own when they return to European action at the Riverside tonight.

Having seen off French youth champions Stade de Reims in the first round of the UEFA Youth League, Boro’s Under-19s have been paired with Italian champions Torino in the second knock-out round.

The first leg takes place tonight, with the return scheduled for Italy in three weeks’ time, as Craig Liddle’s side take their place at European youth football’s top table following last season’s domestic title win.

With the likes of Dael Fry, Harry Chapman and Callum Cooke expected to be involved in tonight’s game, Boro’s squad contains a smattering of players with senior experience gained from this summer’s pre-season programme, and head coach Aitor Karanka regards their European exploits as a key part of their development.

“The main thing is that this is a good game for the kids and the coach (Liddle),” said Karanka. “It is good to see Middlesbrough’s name among some of the big names of European football in this competition.

“It is good for them because, after their efforts last season, they deserve to play this kind of game in this competition, and with these teams.

“They are going to become more mature, and these kind of games will give them invaluable experience. Remember, we have players in the national team with the Under-19s and Under-18s.

“It is good to have these kind of games at the Riverside, with the crowd and another European team. It is nice for them, and I will be there to watch.”

Academy boss Dave Parnaby was delighted with the response to last month’s first-round tie, which saw a crowd of more than 2,000 roar Boro to victory as they overhauled a two-goal deficit from the first leg in France to claim a 6-5 aggregate win.

An even bigger attendance is anticipated tonight, with the continental opposition evoking memories of Middlesbrough’s glorious European nights under former boss Steve McClaren.

“This promises to be another special occasion, and I really hope the people of Teesside come along to back the boys again,” said Parnaby. “We’re very proud of what we have achieved so far, and after watching the way Torino play, I can promise the fans this will be another good game.

“The atmosphere the fans created was really good last time against Reims, and we thank them for that. Now, we’re asking for their backing again.”

General admission prices for tonight’s game are £5 for adults, £3 for Over-65s and £1 for Under-18s. Entry will initially be into the East Stand, with further areas opened as required.
