DURHAM'S Chris Rushworth is high on the list of candidates to replace the injured Jimmy Anderson in the England squad for the fourth Test.

As division one's leading wicket-taker with 69, he was watched yesterday by national selector James Whitaker, who forsook the final day at Edgbaston to watch Durham's Royal London Cup defeat at home to Surrey.

With Adam Lyth's place under threat, Whitaker might also have been interested in Mark Stoneman. But it was not a good day for either player as Durham lost by 49 runs.

Rushworth said: “I know my name has been mentioned. I haven't heard anything but if the call comes I'll be more than happy to do a job.”

Durham coach Jon Lewis said: “We can certainly take it we won't be seeing anything of Mark Wood in the near future and we might lose Rushy as well.

“We weren't good enough in this match and will have to do better against Yorkshire on Sunday.

“There has been some honesty in the dressing room with a couple of guys admitting they thought they were still batting at Taunton.

We have to be smarter than that.

“We did our research into their bowlers, but James Burke surprised us a bit. He got more out of the pitch than we expected, possibly because of his height.

“Our ground fielding has been pretty poor in the first two games. At least that improved, but Surrey squeezed the new batsmen better than we did and they had the one batsman who built an innings.

“Our top three got to 25 then got out, which doesn't win you Twenty20 games, never mind 50-over ones.

“We should have been pretty confident of knocking off 270, but we didn't build partnerships.”
