ADAM MATTHEWS last night completed a £2m move to Sunderland and Dick Advocaat is waiting to hear of more transfer success.

The Celtic full-back, 23, was given permission to head for Wearside to finalise a move after the Black Cats agreed a fee with Celtic on Thursday.

He has signed a four-year deal, and now Advocaat, who has also signed Sebastian Coates from Liverpool, hopes to learn of some major transfer progress in the next fortnight and is looking at his Dutch homeland for a couple of his main targets.

Dinamo Kiev’s Oranje forward Jeremain Lens, who has previously attracted the interest of Manchester United and Liverpool among others, is one of the attacking priorities even if a bid has been left on the table for West Ham’s Stewart Downing.

Chelsea youngster Mario van Ginkel is a realistic midfield target and Advocaat will attempt to use all his powers of persuasion to fend off rival interest from the likes of Newcastle if sporting director Lee Congerton can strike a deal.

Van Ginkel, who was on Boro’s radar 12 months ago, still has two years to run on his contract at Chelsea and is prepared to stay on the Stamford Bridge pay-roll if a deal he is attracted by does not crop up.

He spent last season on loan at AC Milan but injury prevented him from making more than 14 appearances. The Holland international, however, is still highly regarded by Advocaat and is ready to hand him a chance to stay in the Premier League and prove himself as a first team player in England.

Karel Jansen, the player’s agent, said: “I have also heard of the interest. There are indeed a lot of options on the table. We are also in talks with several clubs, but it does not seem useful to state any names.

“We are working to see what is best for his career. We have never asked for any deadline. Everything is still open. Of course (he could still stay at Chelsea). We’re going to put everything in a row and see what the best decision is.”

Advocaat is confident a deal can be struck with Zenit St Petersburg for Belgium defender Nicolas Lombaerts. The 30-year-old is available for around £5m and if Sunderland can line up a transfer then it could heighten the need to offload Argentine defender Santiago Vergini.

Matthews’ deal went through last night and Sunderland director of football Lee Congerton said: “Adam is a player we have been tracking for some time.

“Even though he is only 23 years old, he has a wealth of experience, and I am sure he will continue to improve under the leadership of Dick Advocaat.”

Advocaat added: “We know that we need quality players to improve competition for places in the side, so Adam is a welcome addition to our squad and we are very pleased to welcome him to Sunderland.”

He could be involved in next Thursday’s pre-season friendly with Darlington at Heritage Park.

Sunderland’s Premier League home game with Tottenham, meanwhile, has been rescheduled for television. The game will now take place on Sunday, September 13 at 1.30pm, the same day as the Great North Run.
