AFTER following on, 349 behind, Durham enjoyed their biggest opening stand of the season as Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings put on 116.

But after Jennings departed for 41 Scott Borthwick swiftly followed to leave Durham on 134 for two at tea, still 215 behind.

The previous best opening partnership was 88 at home to Sussex in April and, as usual, Stoneman was the dominant partner.

He was on 72 when Jennings fell five overs before tea, snared for the second time in the match by Adil Rashid. A firm forward push resulted in a bat-pad catch at silly mid-off.

Stoneman then survived a scare when Borthwick called him for a risky single to cover, Will Rhodes' throw resulting in four overthrows.

After his patient half-century in the first innings, Borthwick seemed reluctant to dig in and edged a lavish drive at Steve Patterson to Jonny Bairstow.

Jack Brooks had a confident shout for lbw turned down with Jennings on 22, otherwise Rashid looked the biggest threat with the pitch looking flat and the seamers starting to tire.

Stoneman was on 75 at tea, having slowed down after reaching 50 off 60 balls with ten fours. After his first innings duck, Paul Collingwood was quickly off the mark with a four driven wide of mid-on off Rashid.
