DURHAM enjoyed a good afternoon as the sun came out and Worcestershire's lack of bowling depth was exposed.

It was in the balance at 66 for two when Paul Collingwood marched out on his 39th birthday, but by tea he and Keaton Jennings had both passed 50 and put on 92, leaving a further 160 needed for victory.

Mark Stoneman made 37 in an opening stand of 53 before he got carried away and edged a drive off Joe Leach to the wicketkeeper.

After his morning fling with the bat Leach looked jaded, which the hosts could ill afford as they have only three recognised seamers.

After his heroic century in the first innings, Scott Borthwick fell lbw to Jack Shantry for four. But that merely opened the door for Collingwood to follow his birthday script.

He never looked in any trouble, while Jennings' only errors were in taking two risky singles. As a result of the first he picked up four overthrows when the throw ricocheted off the stumps, and on 22 he would have been run out had the shy from cover found the target.

He cut most of his six fours in reaching 50 off 91 balls, while Collingwood reached the landmark off 58 deliveries.

Worcestershire badly needed a contribution from Sri Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake, who came on at 101 for two.

But in his second over Collingwood drove him over extra cover for six and he generally performed like someone who is unlikely to add to his one Test cap. Durham will grateful that they came here just before Saeed Ajmal's arrival.
