SAMMY AMEOBI could be heading for a summer double once he has helped secure Newcastle United’s stay in the Premier League.

Ameobi is out of contract at St James’ Park before the start of next season and a number of clubs, including Real Sociedad and Middlesbrough, are considering a move for the former England Under-21 international.

And by the time 22-year-old has had his future on Tyneside sorted out he could well have received his first international call-up after Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi outlined an intention to name him in his next squad.

The Tyneside-born forward has played 25 times this season for Newcastle, who would still be due compensation if he was to move on because he is under the age of 24.

Newcastle are aware of interest in him but have not been in any rush to get things sorted which has paved the way for a possible summer departure after years of graduating through the club’s academy.

He has been free to talk to foreign clubs since the turn of the year but is not thought to have signed a pre-contract anywhere, despite David Moyes having some degree of interest in taking him to Spain to join Sociedad.

Middlesbrough’s scouting network have also expressed an interest in him in the past, but Aitor Karanka’s options in the transfer market will be markedly different depending on whether or not their promotion push is successful.

Newcastle are in limbo on the contractual front at this stage, with Ameobi just one of a number of players whose futures are uncertain with the three main ones also including Jonas Gutierrez and Ryan Taylor.

With no permanent head coach installed, Ameobi’s future is in serious doubt although Newcastle owner Mike Ashley would be reluctant to let a young player leave on the cheap.

But that could be what he is faced with if the player himself chooses that it is the right time to leave and with talk of a full international career ahead of him he might think now is that time.

Keshi, the Nigeria boss, suggested earlier this week that he was ready to give Ameobi the option of joining up with the Super Eagles ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

“I was in touch with Sammy Ameobi, and it sort of died down after I left, but we will rekindle that now,” said Keshi, who has taken the Nigeria job once more.

“I will talk to the NFF General Secretary and president to see if we can bring him in for the qualifiers but he’s not the only one. We have several other overseas-born players we want to give a chance to.”

Ameobi is pressing for a starting spot against Swansea this Saturday after starting on the bench in the last two matches, which have ended in defeat to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Carver is desperate for a turnaround in fortunes before the end of the season and with five matches remaining Newcastle are only seven points above the relegation zone.

Dutchman Siem De Jong could figure after coming through Monday night’s Under-21s win at Aston Villa, which would be his first appearance since recovering from surgery to repair a collapsed lung.

The £6m signing has only made three senior appearances and just one league start since his move from Ajax.

He said: “We will see what happens. I don’t think I could play 90 minutes yet, especially not on a level higher, so we will have to build it up and see how it goes.”
