AIMEE Willmott insists her British Swimming Championships assault is far from dead and buried despite falling short of the 400m freestyle podium.

Willmott took her place in a stellar 400m freestyle final line-up alongside the likes of Olympians Jazz Carlin and Hannah Miley.

And while Carlin took victory in a stellar time of 4:03.51 minutes – comfortably qualifying her for this summer’s World Championships in Russia – and Miley claimed bronze, Willmott was left somewhat adrift.

In the end her time of 4:11.98 was good enough for fifth, but with the 400m freestyle and 400m IM events still to come at the London Aquatics Centre later this week, Willmott is adamant the best is yet to come.

“The time was not amazing as I was quite a few seconds off my personal best time but it was alright,” she said.

“I Tried to get into the race right from the off. It was quite a quick race and Jazz went off like a rocket but I am just concentrating on the end of the week now.

“Obviously you have got to try and get into the race at the beginning if you want to be there at the end and these guys go out really quick so I just thought I would go out and see what happens.

“Every time I race I should feel a little better so by Saturday I should hopefully be where I want to be and hopefully everything falls into place.

“My preparation hasn’t been amazing, but I can’t use that as an excuse. I just have to use each day and each session and build towards Saturday.

“Jazz in an amazing athlete and that time is fantastic so to swim the qualifying time for the Worlds is fantastic.”

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Sophie Taylor in the 200m breaststroke final as despite touching home first she was disqualified for an illegal turn, meaning Molly Renshaw took home the gold medal.
