NORTH YORKSHIRE diver Jack Laugher recorded the best result of his career when he claimed his maiden Diving World Series title in Dubai.

Laugher, who is from Ripon and a member of the City of Leeds Diving Club, produced a superb display to win the 3m springboard final and become the first non-Chinese winner of a World Series event this year.

The 20-year-old, who was a double gold medallist at last year’s Commonwealth Games, broke the 90-point barrier in five of his six dives to finish ahead of China’s former Olympic and world champion He Chong.

Laugher had won four bronze and two silver medals in last year's World Series, but yesterday represented the first time he had been able to break through to the top of the podium.

He had to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on a medal in Thursday’s 3m synchro, when he finished fourth with Chris Mears, but he made no mistake in the 3m springboard, his preferred individual event.

Leading from the start with an opening jump of 91.80, he saved his best for last as his final dive earned 97.20 points and enabled him to claim gold.

Chong finished 32.50 points behind Laugher in second place, with another Chinese diver, Cao Yuan, winning bronze.
