GARY MILLS has hailed the debut display from Adam Campbell as the Newcastle youngster helped Gateshead return to winning ways with a 2-0 success at Nuneaton.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Premier League neighbours, found the net twice in the first half to end a run of five games without a victory for the Heed.

Campbell, signed from Newcastle along with Callum Roberts on Friday, ensured that Gateshead moved to within three points of a play-off spot after a recent blip.

Mills said: “I was delighted with him. It’s a big move for him – his contract is up at the end of the season and we’re hoping he can do well for himself and for us.

“You could see here how he can get in behind and make things happen – and he couldn’t have made a better start. We’ve talked this season about how good performances have been without getting results and it’s a massive result for us here.”

Campbell grabbed his first after quarter of an hour when he cleverly beat Theo Streete before calmly slotting the finish beyond Christian Dibble.

After Roberts had gone close to extending the lead shortly after half an hour, Campbell hit his second moments later. Roberts’ deflected cross dropped to him at the back post and he lifted a finish high in to the net to give Gateshead the points.

Gateshead: Bartlett, Baxter, Curtis, Clark, Jones, Turnbull, Oster, Pattison (Gjokaj 64), Saint-Luce (Ramshaw 88), Roberts, Campbell. Subs (not used): Chandler, Rankine, Wright.

YORK CITY failed to give their relegation fight a boost by losing 2-0 to promotion chasers Stevenage at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen remain just a point above the drop zone after Adam Marriott and Tom Pett’s goals sealed the points on a forgettable afternoon for the hosts.

York goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik had brilliantly denied Pett before the first was struck six minutes before half-time. Marriott was on hand to head over the line after Charlie Lee’s volley rebounded to him off the bar.

Stevenage wrapped up the points in the 64th minute when Pett found Olejnik’s top corner from 30 yards with a stunning drive.

York boss Russ Wilcox said: “Not good enough, that’s the bottom line. I feel for the supporters. The last two home performances have been outstanding, but we just didn’t perform.

“The lack of quality was eye catching – we just looked lost and it was a really bad day.”

York: Olejnik, Halliday, McCombe, Lowe, Ilesanmi (Straker 56), Coulson, Summerfield, Penn, Carson (Meikle 68), Hyde, Fletcher (Morris 68). Subs not used: McCoy, Montrose, Winfield, Platt.
