A NORTH Yorkshire golfer will attempt to get his career back on track after his frustrating year on the European Tour ended on a positive note.

Harrogate’s John Parry endured a difficult spell on the professional circuit, missing 22 cuts in a row after he started the 2014 season with a tied 44th finish at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Parry improved in the final six weeks of the season, but the damage had already been done and despite his best efforts he faced the gruelling challenge of trying to secure his 2015 card through Tour School.

His better form, earning him around €50,000 since finishing tied 71st at the Omega European Masters at the beginning of September, carried over in to Tour School last week.

After playing solid golf, culminating in a final round 67 to climb up to sixth and secure one of 27 cards at the final qualifying stage at the PGA Catalunya Resort, he can mix it for another year among the European elite.

Parry said: “I am delighted to have secured my card on the European Tour for next year. This season has been tough but I felt near the end of the year I was finding my form, even if the scores didn’t always show that.

“Everything seemed to click this week. Since Perth, I have been working hard on my game with my coach and I am really pleased that all of the long hours and hard work we put in has reaped rewards.”

More than 150 golfers from around the world qualified for Catalunya aiming to claim one of the remaining Tour cards. Hexham’s Chris Paisley also secured one, so will join Hartlepool’s Graeme Storm on the rota next season after his relatively successful year by his recent standards.

Barnard Castle’s Rob Dinwiddie, who has not played since June, is also likely to be still around after effectively writing off 2014 because of bad injuries.

Northumberland duo Kenneth Ferrie and Morpeth’s former British Amateur champion Garrick Porteous, however, missed out.

Parry’s performance in Spain, though, was of the highest quality. During one of the most difficult weeks of the golfing calendar, he stayed in and around the coveted top 25 places after shooting an opening round four-under 68.

He did not fall below the top 20 throughout the six rounds and ended up in tied for fifth on 13 under.

The recently turned 28-year-old will now look to repeat his previous Tour form and avoid a repeat of what happened this time around, finishing 171st in the Race to Dubai.

Last year he earned the right to play in the lucrative Turkish Airlines Open through missing just 12 cuts all year and his earnings were boosted significantly by top five finishes at the ISPS Handa Wales Open and the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

After ensuring he will be still on the main European Tour next year, it is that sort of form which Parry has his sights on trying to repeat as he looks to avoid having to battle it out at Tour School once more.
