DESPITE amassing 50 points last Saturday for the second time in four weeks, Darlington Mowden Park might have to wait until next week for the chance to move clear of the danger zone in National One.

Tomorrow's trip to second-placed Rosslyn Park is followed by the visit of Loughborough Students, who have slipped into the third relegation spot, two points behind Mowden.

A crowd of 1,016 at The Northern Echo Arena struggled to see what was happening on the far side of the pitch once the fog started to close in 15 minutes into the 50-10 win against Blackheath.

Scrum half Zylon McGaffin ended his month's loan from Rotherham with what the sponsors deemed a man of the match display, although full back Henry Robinson was equally deserving.

Max Connon is likely to return to the No 9 shirt tomorrow to partner Tom Hodgson, whose six conversions out of seven should see him retain the kicking duties, despite the return of Garry Law.

Law had a fairly quiet game at inside centre as he and tight head prop Matty Shields returned after their two-week injury absences, while York-born Joe Maud was introduced at blind side.

Shields and Gareth Nesbit were the starting props, but Ralph Appleby was on for 50 minutes in an increasingly dominant scrum.

Claiming to be depleted by injuries, Blackheath did not look like a team worthy of sixth place, allowing the match to drift away after competing well for the first 25 minutes. They trailed 50-3 before scoring a late try following an interception in their own half.

Mowden were a little shaky at the line-out early on and didn't deal very well with several restarts, but three tries in the last 15 minutes of the first half banked the four-try bonus and left the visitors with little stomach for the fight.

The opening try came after three minutes when a maul was illegally halted and from seven metres McGaffin took the penalty quickly and darted over.

On the restart he kicked straight into touch from just outside the 22, which allowed Blackheath to mount some pressure and after missing one 35-metre penalty they landed the next.

Mowden got back on the front foot when a loose ball was hacked on and winger Joe Nellany was just beaten to the touch down. Then the second try came after 25 minutes from a slick move in which Hodgson, going left, turned the ball back inside for Robinson to take at pace on a well-angled run which took him past two defenders to score.

The third resulted from Nellany charging down a clearance. He re-gathered a metre short and lost the ball in the tackle as he dived for the line, but it was adjudged that the ball had been punched from his grasp.

That meant a five-metre scrum with Mowden's put-in and they drove over for No 8 Guy van den Dries to touch down.

On the stroke of half-time Nellany brust down the middle with Robinson in support and when the ball came back there was a big overlap on the left, hooker Matt Thompson giving the scoring pass to skipper Cameron Mitchell.

A Hodgson penalty made it 29-3 before Mowden took an early strike against the head in the second half as they started to pulverise the Blackheath scrum.

It was from another dominant scrum that McGaffin nipped over for his second, then replacement Chris McTurk came off the left wing to take a short pass and burst under the posts.

Finally an excellent pass from McGaffin was taken at pace by the elusive Robinson, who sailed through a gap and sent right winger Jamie Barnard over. Hodgson capped his fine display by converting from the touchline.

Middlesbrough remain third in Yorkshire One after a 26-0 home win against a Wath side who dominated possession but had no penetration.

Skipper Rob Bellerby had a good game, making a break and supplying a neat reverse pass for Jack Bircham to score the first try.

The captain scored after both he and Aeden Moloney beat their markers on the outside before the winger passed back inside.

Good defence under pressure kept the 14-0 lead intact until Boro broke out after 60 minutes with an excellent move which saw Adam Nolson stopped just short. Minutes later he did get over following a good pass from Connor Foley and the fourth try was finished by lock Euan Tremlett side-stepping the last defender following a good move from a line-out.

Stockton took their points tally in Durham and Northumberland One to 39, one fewer than their total in the whole of last season, when they won 40-26 at home to Ryton.

All six tries were scored by forwards, the first three coming from props Andy Bailes (2) and Tom Nelson, who now has three in three games.

No 8 Joe Green twice charged over from the back of scrums and flanker Lewis Grey completed a good handling movement. Danny Phinn continued his good kicking form, including a 40-metre penalty and a touchline conversion in his tally.

Darlington's slide continued with a 32-10 home defeat by Hartlepool Rovers. Although centre Andy Pugh was back, the experience of Richard Snowball, Dan Miller and Colin Rogers was missed in the forwards.

Young full back Jack Harrild kicked a penalty and converted a try by player-coach Gary Beck to give Darlington a 10-0 lead, but by half-time they trailed 13-10. Rovers added three more tries after the interval.

Northallerton are fourth in Yorkshire Three after a 45-7 home win against Stocksbridge, despite the scorers of their first two tries, Patrick Hebblethwaite and Martin Dennison, picking up injuries.

After letting three chances slip in the first 15 minutes, scrum half Hebblethwaite darted over from a ruck before he and Sandy Gray had to be replaced by Simon Manthorpe and Jack Radcliffe.

Dennison finished off a rolling maul but made way for the even more experienced Ni c Bainbridge at half-time, when the score was 19-0. The third try came when No 8 James Hopkin, player of the season so far, crashed over and he added a second after the break.

There were also two tries for Jack Barker and one for Jonny Franks, with Jedd Bainbridge adding five conversions, while there was a promising debut by 19-year-old Tom Cornforth.

North visit Thornensians tomorrow, but it remains to be seen whether the seconds will have a game after failing to raise a side to visit Stockton. The thirds did play at home to Stockton and lost 38-10, the tries coming from Gareth Norton and Stuart Baker junior.
