AN own goal just five minutes from the end put battling Spennymoor Town into the last qualifying round of the FA Trophy at the expense of Leek Town last night.

Despite missing three regulars, Moors improved as the game went on, and the winner gives them a third qualifying round tie at home to Chasetown.

Leek’s Tim Grice was off target twice with headers in the first 20 minutes, and just after the half hour mark Moors keeper Adam McHugh blocked another close range effort from Grice.

Moors midfielder Anthony Peacock was the subject of same late challenges as Moors tried to get in the game, while striker Liam Henderson failed to re-appear for the second half after limping off at half time, and was replaced by Nathan Fisher.

Moors shrugged off the enforced change, and nearly took the lead with a 30 yarder by Joe Tait that struck the top of the crossbar then Nathan Fisher was blocked by the Leek keeper when he was clean though.

Andrew Stephenson was just off target from the edge of the box, then with seven minutes left Shane Henry fired into the side netting.

But two minutes later, Moors were celebrating when Kallum Griffiths put the ball into the crowded box, and one of the Leek defenders turned the ball past his own keeper.
